Ian Marsland – DipFP
Principal & Financial Adviser
My career in the finance industry in 1977 started with a bank after completing high school. I spent 10 years in general banking and then moved to the bank’s Financial Services division where I spent a further eight years. Here, I undertook roles in Financial Planning as well as Corporate Superannuation.
I then sought to broaden and enhance my knowledge of the financial services industry. Leaving the bank, I spent the next three years in Business Development with a locally based fund manager and then a further eighteen months as the Practice Manager of a boutique advice firm.
In 1999 I joined AXA Australia, not long after their buyout of National Mutual. This role encompassed providing support and training to the advisor community in relation to AXA’s suite of superannuation, investment and insurance products. I achieved some success in this role at a state and national level, culminating with being named AXA’s National Business Development Manager of the year in 2002. I continue to remain proud of these achievements.
However, the time for change was approaching. I had met Steve Young, MWP Financial’s other Principal when I joined AXA and over our time there, we became friends. Steve was also looking for a change from his corporate role and was in advanced negotiations to purchase a financial planning practice from a retiring advisor. Steve approached me to gauge my interest in joining him and the rest as they say, is history.
Nine years on and our business continues to grow steadily. I have to say that the past 9 years, while challenging, have proven to be the most enjoyable of my career so far. Our team has grown from Steve, Steve’s wife Karen as Practice Manager and me to now include an additional 4 employees. It is a source of great pride that we have yet to have any of our employees leave our business.
This team stability coupled with long term industry experience and knowledge is where I believe our competitive edge lies – for both existing and new clients. Our three advisers are supported by an experienced, dedicated and friendly administration team.
Our size does not limit our capacity to provide excellent service and we continue to strive to provide a relaxed, personal environment for our clients. Our strength comes from knowing our clients, meeting with them regularly and when required, responding to their advice needs in a professional and timely manner.
I look forward to continuing the relationships I have with my existing clients as well as welcoming any new clients who wish to partner with us in assisting with their advice needs and achieving their financial goals.

Stephen Young – DipFP
Principal & Financial Adviser
Steve commenced in the financial services industry in 1997, working in a variety of business development and management roles in Adelaide and Melbourne before launching MWP Financial with Ian. “The most enjoyable and satisfying part of what we do is helping our clients achieve their financial and lifestyle goals.” Steve is married to Karen and they have three young children. As well as following his children’s sporting and extra-curricular pursuits, Steve is an avid sports fan, enjoying many sports including soccer, AFL and cricket. “When we get a spare moment, we love to spend time with family and friends, often over a leisurely lunch or dinner and usually involving a glass or two of great South Australian wine.”
Sue Macklin – B.Ec, DipFP
Sue has worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years and financial planning for nearly 20! She has two adult children who now live interstate – so travelling to spend time with them has become a favourite thing to do. Sue also spends as much time as she can outdoors – cycling, bushwalking, gardening, and getting involved in a range of conservation projects. She continues to work in financial planning because she enjoys engaging and working with clients to help them realise their best financial outcomes.
Karen Young – B.Com
I started my career in the financial services industry in 1990 and have held a wide variety of administration, supervisory and product development roles with major fund managers.
Since the commencement of MWP Financial in 2009, I have been responsible for the day to day running of the business – looking after our Compliance, Marketing and Finance, as well as managing our Administration team.
I am married to Steve and we have three gorgeous children – all busy teenagers who are involved in cricket, football, netball and rowing.
As well as acting as a taxi service for our children, I enjoy spending time relaxing with my family and friends and love a good book. Family travel is also a highlight.
Karen Scarman – DipFP
Client Services Officer
My role at MWP Financial is as a Client Services Officer. I work closely with the advisers in implementing their advice and processing transactions and other paperwork on behalf of our clients.
I am often the person clients talk to when they ring the office and am more than happy to help with any enquiries.
My career in the Financial Services industry began in 1981 working in the banking sector, initially with the Reserve Bank and later with the Commonwealth Bank in Margin Lending. In this role I had a lot of contact with financial advisers and decided to make the move to financial planning in 2007. I commenced with MWP Financial in June 2011 and completed my Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) that same year.
In my spare time I like taking my Golden Retriever for walks along the river and the beach, reading a good book and enjoying good food and wine with friends. I have just started learning guitar, so hopefully, soon, I will be able to play my favourite songs and attempt some singing!
Belinda Wise – DipFS (FP)
I started in the financial planning industry in 1997 in an administration role and have worked in various locations in Wodonga, Darwin, Toowoomba and Adelaide. I have added in some banking industry experience for good measure and now perform the role of remote paraplanner for our team.
I am married with two children and now live in sunny Queensland. I enjoy travelling, creative arts and crafts and Haigh’s chocolates!
Kim Taylor –

I provide quality support to both our Clients and our Advisers by assisting in the day to day management of clients’ needs. I have over two decades experience in Banking and Financial Services.
Over that time, I have held roles of great diversity, all with a predominant focus on customer service.
Prior to commencing with MWP Financial, I worked with a Credit Union, a Big 4 bank in a range of divisions, and within a financial planning practice.
I am married with two children and adore spending time with family and friends, in particular when travelling in our caravan.
